Decomposition Library
How do we design clothes today with their future in mind?
The Decomposition Library is a collection of textile decomposition experiments, observing and cataloguing gradual decomposition of textiles and biomaterials in compost, with the aim of raising awareness of textile lifecycles in the design process.
The decomposition library originally started as an online archive, but has since grown into a learning resource, to research and provide insight into practical solutions to implement decomposition in the everyday practice of fashion and textile designers. The aim is to provide an opportunity to improve material literacy and re-introduce the topic of soil health and material lifecycle to the design process.
It also acts as an inquiry into what benefits bringing decomposition into the design process can provide not only to people but also soils and the microorganisms among them.
